Live by the Rules

If I had a dollar for every wish of good health,

I'd be as gleeful as can be, drowning in wealth.

But life doesn't work that way, I am afraid.

We must live by the rules that others have made.

If I had a dollar for every dream of mine,

I'd buy a theme park just so I can skip the line.

If I had a dollar for every gray hair on my head,

There would be little left of which to dread.

But life doesn't work that way, I am afraid.

We must live by the rules that others have made.

If I had a dollar for every hour I've been alive,

I'd buy a boat and explore the depths in a deep sea dive.

If I had a dollar for every piece of chocolate I've enjoyed,

I'd own a candy factory, where hundreds would be employed.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I had,

I'd repeat this poem, a neat little ballad.

But life doesn't work that way, I am afraid.

We must live by the rules that others have made.
